Of course, Generation X is inevitably criticized. Even though they are in their 50s, they still talk about the amazing Rave party in 1989, even if no one cares about this party. They also didn't seem to realize that their indifference and cynical attitudes actually came from the privileged class of that era. But anyway, some of the coolest people on the surface are really Gen X: Chloë Sevigny, Alexander McQueen, Winona Ryder, Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss. Many of the music, art and media created by millennials and Gen Z are actually built on Gen X, from the underground punk music event “Battle Girl” to the Little Zhi Culture, from Sofia Coppola to David Forest, from British pop music Britpop to MTV. The culture created by this often overlooked group of people is indeed everywhere.
Besides, the fashion style is good, Generation X is definitely not inferior to people. Nowadays, young people dress like they have just come out of 2002: loose jeans, long-sleeved T-shirt sleeves, or thin strap dressing with a pair of “ugly and fashionable” shoes. Don't forget that although these dresses are now millennials, Gen X first wore them first. Yes, boot-style jeans were first worn by jeans, but without Generation X wearing it into a universal uniform, jeans may not affect fashion culture so much. Sometimes I re-wrote the old episodes of “The Wife in New York” (“Sometimes” means “often”), and I really think: These sisters are really good at it. They won't resist wearing lap boots to go to a nightclub, nor do they bother with talking about a 12-step maintenance program (Gen X is not the kind of person who wants skin care secrets).
Of course, it is meaningless to divide people into a generation after all. I may resonate more with people three years younger than me and considered Gen Z, rather than with a 44-year-old millennial. Everyone in their fifties is very different (I dare say that the “Karen hairstyle” should have been invented by Generation X, but don't quote me). But while Gen Z and Millennials are still arguing about being naturally trendy and cooler, I want to make an alternative view: maybe none of us is the answer, maybe we are not the only contestants at all.
